There's an article in today's Dallas-Fort Worth Star-Telegram about a young Army vet, 21, who returned from Iraq suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and went AWOL with the help of his family, rather than return to Iraq. It's not the greatest article -- it says very little, and terminates well before covering even the story it was attempting to cover -- but at least it counts as coverage on this singularly-important topic.
The most troubling items in the albeit quite short article? The 21 year old vet's emotional stress was so bad, his hair was falling out in patches (photographs accompany the article); and his parents, who found his suicide note (fortunately, he has not committed suicide) turned to the newspaper in town to get some help, when they couldn't figure out where else to turn. The newspaper profiled the family in a front page article, which exposed the family to criticism. And the son ended up having to do jail time for going AWOL, but claims he is doing better now (article doesn't clarify why he would be doing better now, though.)
